“The greatest danger in life is not that you aim too high and fail; but that you aim too low and succeed.” – Anon
For a young man who is both ambitious and creative, modern life has two paths…
You can choose the system, or you can choose yourself.
You can play it safe, or you can risk it all.
You can have security, or you can have freedom.
One path is predictable; the other is unknown.
Along the former, you will dump your precious time and energy into a black-hole of work and sacrifice for a paycheck.
Instead of building a lasting treasure for yourself, you will spend your efforts to make another man rich and free… while you make a living.
You will work to make his dreams come true at the expense of your own.
A monthly stipend of survival tickets, called dollars, will give you the means to afford modest lifestyle upgrades, and indulge in lukewarm pleasures at short periods of leisure.
You may earn enough to support a family, own a home and a car, live a moderate existence free from the burden of what comes next?
But you will never own your time… and you will have little of yourself left at the end of each day to develop your own spiritual and creative capacities.
Your target ends will have been devoured whole by your means.
To the system that issues your survival tokens, you will be a human resource to be used up for energy… mind, body and identity consumed like coal or timber.
The system will change the shape of your mind and being. It will squeeze the light from your eyes and break the will of your individualism.
It will grind your dreams to dust and shut your mind in a narrow prison of other people’s expectations.
Your creativity and imagination will become like bastardized step-children who only get to see daddy on the weekends… when his cheating ex drops them off.
Your own personal projects will never see the best and brightest hours of your day.
You will surround yourself with other flattened souls whose idea of freedom is eat, drink and be merry.
You will drift into a life of comfortable dissatisfaction: chasing luxury, convenience and escapism… a fiend for novelty, entertainment, manufactured amusement and material vanity.
This is the path of fear: afraid of being alone; afraid of being an outcast; afraid of being uncomfortable; afraid of disappointing your family; afraid of being poor; afraid of not having a woman; afraid of risk; afraid of change; afraid of confrontation; afraid of standing out; afraid to break your limits; afraid of your own potential.
A fear of failure is one-in-the-same as a fear of success: You fear the unknown.
“A weak mind is like a microscope, that magnifies trifling things but is unable to receive great ones.” – Chesterfield
Warriors of independence choose another course.
We daily manifest the animating contest of our self-actualization.
We are lord and commander of our own happiness.
We’d rather sleep on the street than trade our lives away for comfort and security.
We know there can be no real adventure without the promise of danger.
We survive on scraps and tear the bandages ruthlessly from our own wounds.
We’d sooner spend the rest of our days in a holy commune, than stuck in an office, working on someone else’s dream.
We’d rather fail ten-thousand times in pursuit of our true will, than deprive ourselves the opportunity to develop our full potentials.
We’d rather starve in the wilderness and have our corpse picked apart by birds, than drain our vitality as a zombie-consumer on a corporate plantation.
We do not settle. We will not settle. We cannot settle.
We have no choice at all.
For us, independence is our sole obsession… nurtured to the point of madness.
For us, a life of complacent mediocrity is an emergency.
We will sacrifice everything – time, money, relationships – for a shot at owning ourselves and realizing greatness.
We are ALL IN on every bet.
Our motto is: “I will drink the ocean, and at my will mountains will crumble.”
We operate on irrational, unconditional, self-reverence.
We do not ask permission. We do not take offense. We offer no apology.
We believe in ourselves completely and without compromise…
…to the point of folly, but we do not relent!
We are critical thinkers.
We trust in our own capacities to resolve objective truth.
We trust ourselves even when it seems the whole world is against us.
We are bound by no narratives of the mainstream – media, academia, political.
We do not entertain fairy-tales spun for sheep.
On the contrary, we assume that the opposite of what is considered mainstream conventional wisdom or common knowledge is closer to the truth.
We do not seek counsel nor favor from the consumer crowd. We reject their advice and their ideals.
They have nothing for us but noise, lies and discouragement.

You can choose to let go of other people’s expectations of you.
You can choose to accept your own truth and ignore everyone else.
You can choose to go after whatever it is that has been gnawing at you.
You can break free and enjoy the trials of a self-directed life… the world be damned!
But you must make the decision to commit and endure the long road ahead.
No one else can lead you through the woods.
No one else can show you the way to yourself.
Nobody will be left to remember if you succeed or fail or give up.
Your life will be as great or as little as you make it.
The foundations of primary independence are however, consistent in their advantage:
- Get rid of all your non-essential possessions and expenses. Embrace minimalism and anti-consumerism. Be ruthless in the cutting-out of things that drain your time, money, virility and focus.
- Make your health strong and resilient through fitness, diet, sleep, sex, meditation, yoga, fasting, higher-consciousness and exposure to nature.
- Erase everyone from your life who does not empower and support you. They cannot see your vision, they do not have your eyes.
- Kill your television, newspaper, social media, Netflix, football, video games and all other forms of hypnotizing escapism.
- Earn and save as much capital as possible from your day job, while you work on the BIG THING. Carve out pockets of your day to work on it – you will find many.
- Pour all your time and energy into your projects. Take breaks only to refresh yourself and maintain your health. Let nothing else exist for you until your dream is realized.
Day by day, hour by hour, block by block… keep building. Soon enough you will have a fortress that is strong enough to cover your bills.
Then TRIPLE-DOWN until your castle reaches the sky.
Build a business… or save aggressively and invest wisely.
Money is time, freedom and flexibility… and without income independence, your life is a hamster cage.
“If you want peace, prepare for a war.” – Anon
Weeding through the grit and grime of entrepreneurial self-ownership on sheer fortitude is the path of happiness.
Succeed or fail; the opportunity to test yourself and get better, smarter, stronger is a much greater reward than gold or jewels.
Otherwise… there are plenty of warm, cozy seats along the super-highway to indentured conformity. At least you’ll have a lot of company.
But be sure to occasionally meditate on the vision of your idealized self. And then beside it, paint a picture of a bitter old man looking back on his life with hopeless disappointment and regret.
Hell is laying on your deathbed and meeting the man that you could have been.
So don’t say that you don’t know what to do or where to start.
You aren’t going to find it in a book nor hear it from others.
You’ll never get permission or confirmation on your dream.
You know what you want from life.
You know the man you want to be.
You know it better than anyone else.
And if you aren’t willing to trust yourself and take action… then no one can ever help you and nothing will ever change. As the old Indian proverb goes:
“You cannot wake the man who is only pretending to be asleep.”
